Henkilö Biografia Lyhyt kuvaus henkilön elämästä ja teoista Kotiseutuneuvos, rehtori Jussi Rainio kuoli sairauden murtamana Keuruulla tiistaina 24. 2.1998. Rainio syntyi Helsingissä maaliskuun 23. päivänä vuonna 1914. Ylioppilaaksi hän pääsi Heinolassa 1933. Hän opiskeli Helsingin yliopistossa suomen kieltä, suomalaista ja vertailevaa kansanrunoustiedettä, suomalais-ugrilaista kansatiedettä ja kotimaista kirjallisuutta. Filosofian kandidaatiksi hän valmistui vuonna 1943. Vuonna 1974 hän hankki maisterin arvonimen. Sanomalehtialalle aikonut Rainio työskenteli Heinolan Sanomien vt. päätoimittajana vuosina 1936-1939. Nykysuomen sanakirjan toimittajana hän toimi 1945. Samana vuonna hänet valittiin Keuruun yhteiskoulun rehtoriksi. Rehtorina Rainio oli eläkkeelle siirtymiseensä asti, vuoteen 1974. Rainion aikana koulu toimi 15 vuotta pääasiassa nykyisessä teletalon rakennuksessa. Toimipisteitä oli kuitenkin yhteensä kahdeksan. Uusi koulutalo valmistui 1960 ja vuosina 1974-75 sitä laajennettiin. Jussi Rainio teki mittavan työn kieltentutkijana, perinteentutkijana ja kirjoittajana. Hän oli myös sukututkija ja koulutti useilla kursseilla uusia sukutukijoita. Kartoittaessaan oman sukunsa, Heinolan Hahlien vaiheita, hän selvitti noin 400 perheen sukulaisuussuhteet noin 300 vuoden ajalta. Keuruulle asetuttuaan Rainio perehtyi tarkoin seudun historiaan. Kirjoitetun historian puuttuessa hän etsi monet perustiedot arkistojen uumenista. Tutustuminen Keuruun menneisyyteen vei hänet mukaan kotiseutuasioiden hoitoon. Monien Keuruuta käsitelleiden julkaisujen sarjan avasi Kotiseutuni Keuruun kirja 1957 ja päätti Karhunsoutaja v. 1993, jonka päätoimittaja Jussi Rainio oli. Nimitutkijana Rainio paneutui muun muassa Keuruu -nimen synnyn selvittämiseen. Kotiseututyötä Rainio ei tehnyt vain arkistoissa, vaan pyöräilemällä pitkin Keuruun, Pihlajaveden, Multian ja Mäntän kyläteitä tallentamassa nimistöä Suomen Paikannimiarkistolle. Arkistoa Rainio kartutti lähes 15 000 sanalla. Keuruun paikannimitoimikunnassa Rainio työskenteli sihteerinä ja puheenjohtajana 1950-luvun alusta. Jussi Rainion sydäntä lähellä olivat myös suomensukuiset kansat, erityisesti puoliso Ninan kotiseutu Vepsä. Itä-Karjalaan hänen tiensä vei jatkosodan hyökkäysvaiheessa, jolloin hänelle osoitettiin valistusupseerin paikka Soutjärveltä. Rainio perehtyi vepsäläisten asuinseutuun, kieleen ja perinteeseen koko sydämellään. Hän osallistui muun muassa vepsänkielisen aapisen laatimiseen ja käänsi Markuksen evankeliumin. Vielä 1990-luvulla Rainio jatkoi työtään laatimalla laajan vepsäläisten arvoitusten kokoelman. Lenkkinä Vepsän ja Keuruun kotiseutuperinteiden harrastamisessa Rainiolla oli toiminta Suomi-Neuvostoliitto-seurassa. Hän oli paitsi seuran paikallisosaston puheenjohtaja myös Keski-Suomen piiritoimikunnan jäsen. Paljon lukijoita ja ystäviä Rainio sai myös paikallislehden välityksellä. Huumoria ja kannanottoja viljelleen pakinoitsijan ja vahvat taustatiedot hallinneen lehtimiehen kynänjälki rikastutti paikallislehden antia vuosikymmenten ajan. Jussi Rainio oli Suur-Keuruun Sanomien hallituksen puheenjohtaja 1949-1979. Rainio oli aktiivisesti mukana myös kirjasto - ja kulttuurilautakunnissa. Valtakunnallisella tasolla hän oli Suomen Historiallisen Seuran, Suomalaisen kirjallisuuden Seuran, Suomalaisugrilaisen Seuran sekä Suomen Sukututkimusseuran jäsen. Poliittisiin puolueisiin Rainio ei sitoutunut. Rainion työ oli julkisesti tunnustettua ja palkittua. Kotiseutuneuvoksen arvonimen hän sai 1988. Hänelle myönnettiin muun muassa Sibelius Akatemian Wegelius-mitali, Kalevalan juhlavuoden mitali, Keuruun kunnan kulttuuripalkinto 1983, Kotiseutuliiton ansiomitali ja Paikallislehtien liiton mitali sekä Kansakoululaitoksen satavuotismitali. Hänen isänsä oli Saarijärven kappalainen ja varakirkkoherra, Laurentius Johannis Carbonarius, joka kuoli Elisabetin ollessa parivuotias. Laurentiuksen arvellaan olleen Scharbou-sukua, joka on vaikuttanut virkamiehinä mm. Viipurissa ja Kuopiossa ja on alkuaan tullut Lyypekistä. Elisabetin äidin Gertrud Simonintytär Storchovian, (6.7.1656 Rautalampi-1738 Keuruu Huttula), isä oli Rautalammin kappalainen Simon Erikinpoika Storchovius, mahdollisesti viipurilaista virkamiessukua ja alkuisin Tallinnasta. Gertrudin äiti Anna oli oletettavasti ahvenanmaalaisen nimismiehen Hans Pålackin tytär. Keuruun vanhimpien rippikirjojen mukaan Anna asui tyttärensä luona Pöyhölän pappilassa ja kuoli siellä vuonna 1701. Laurentius Carbonariuksen kuoltua vuonna 1694, Gertrud Storchovia avioitui jo vuonna 1699, myös leskeksi jääneen Keuruun kappalaisen Johan Jacobinpoika Horteliuksen kanssa ja muutti Pöyhölän kappalaispappilaan tyttärensä Elisabetin kanssa. Tämä uusi aviomies oli oikeudessa vuosina 1708–1713 huoruuden takia ja pantiin viralta. Näiden oikeudenkäyntien ansiosta Elisabetin elämästä saatiin tietää, että hän oli oleskellut Ahvenanmaalla vuonna 1708, eli ilmeisesti sukulaistensa luona. Isonvihan tapahtumat koskettivat Keuruuta vaikeimmin vuosina 1713–1715. Tällöin Ampialan kylän ja pappilan väet olivat tarpeen mukaan paossa Ampialan lähistöllä olleella piilopirtillä. Siellä kerrotaan olleen myös Huttulan talon Jussi-poika, joka vei Elisabetin Huttulan talon emännäksi. Vuoden 1715 joulun aikaan tapahtui Ampialassa tunnettu Keuruun kirkkoherra Herpmanin sissipoikien kuolemaan johtanut venäläisten hyökkäys, jonka seurauksena Keuruun papisto, myöskin Johan Hortelius vangittiin. Kovin komeaan taloon Huttulan talon uusi emäntä Elisabet ei tullut, varsinkaan isonvihan ryöstelyiden jälkeen. Elämä kuitenkin jatkui ja perheeseen syntyi ensimmäinen lapsi, tytär, vuonna 1717 ja sen jälkeen ainakin seitsemän lasta, joiden jälkipolvistakin on tietoja. Huttulan uuden emännän Elisabetin kerrotaan istuttaneen pihlajan talon saunatien varteen, ja tämän puun vesoja kasvaa siellä edelleen. Elisabet Carbonarian aviomies Huttulan isäntä Juho Mikonpoika kuoli 4.9.1743, jolloin osa lapsista jäi alaikäisiksi. Säilyneestä perunkirjasta saa selville paljon lasten sijoittumisesta eri puolille, etupäässä lähitienoille, mutta ainakin kaksi poikaa muutti Uuteenkaarlepyyhyn ja tytär Regina oli Turussa ja Pietarsaaressa. Elisabet Carbonaria kuoli Huttulassa vanhana äitinä 4.2.1767. Hänet haudattiin Keuruun kirkon lattian alle. Elisabetin tarina on ollut jo vuosisatojen ajan tärkeä osa Huttulan talon ja suvun vaiheita. Elisabetin elämäntarinan kuuli myös kirjailija Joel Lehtonen (1881–1934) Keuruun Ollilan talossa viettäminään kesinä. Hän asui kotitilallaan Pihlajavedellä ollessaan. Lahti kävi puusepänkoulun Lahdessa. Eenok Lahti harrasti aktiivisesti valokuvausta. Hän oli rakentanut kotitilalleen oman pimiön ja hänellä oli tarvittavat välineet kuvien kehittämiseen. Hän kiersi kyläkuvaajana kaikenlaisissa tilaisuuksissa ja otti henkilökuvia hoitaen esim. rippikuvien ottamiset. Eenok oli monitaitoinen mies ja mm. teki Pihlajaveden vanhan kirkon remontin suunnitelmat toimien myös töiden valvojana ja päämestarina. Hän muutti 1940-luvun lopulla Espooseen, missä hän työskenteli puutyönopettajana kehitysvammaisten Rinnekodissa. Lahti on haudattu Pihlajaveden vanhalle hautausmmaalle.
